No True Agent

Yesterday we examined the way our Agents police the permit-owning miners. Even bot-aspirant Code-violators sometimes buy permits, but our Agents are very good at sniffing out a snake in the grass. Today, we'll look at another form of highsec fraud: Fake "Agents" of the New Order.

One fine day in highsec, CODE Inspector inspected potential Code violations. So far, so good. Any miner should feel perfectly comfortable seeing local chat like the above.

As our ranks continue to grow, it's becoming increasingly common for Agents to bump into each other. Not literally bump, you understand. I mean they encounter each other unexpectedly.

Suddenly, a conflict arose. CODE Inspector and Springheel both claimed to be Agents of the New Order. One of them was lying.

What's a carebear to do in this situation? We know that the highsec PvE'ers must respect the authority of their minders. How can they comply if they can't distinguish a true Agent from a false one?

It's like one of those TV shows where a good guy and an evil clone both claim to be the real thing. It's every carebear's worst nightmare, I would think.

Choose wisely. If you're not careful, you might end up serving the whims of a "CODE Prick" instead of a Gallant Agent.

Springheel found himself in deep water after CODE Inspector checked his bio. He tried to shrug it off while he continued to command the local miners.

But the pretense was unraveling. A carebear's nature will always shine through eventually.

The false Agent tried to imitate the glorious appearance of a true Agent, but he came up short. He came to rely instead upon the repulsive--but familiar--habits and language of a rebel carebear.

As the power of the New Order is felt more keenly throughout highsec, more and more carebears will seek to misappropriate Agent status. They can't pull it off for very long. They simply don't think like real Agents. It's one thing to grasp power; it's another thing to have the strength needed to wield it.

Then Springheel's dirty little secrets came to light:

He was, in fact, a carebear all along. He was even ganked in a particularly fail-fit industrial ship. Case closed.

Comic timing aside, Springheel was no Gallant, and certainly no Agent. The truth won. The CODE won.

There's no denying the power of the New Order. As time goes on, it will become more and more tempting for some carebears to impersonate Agents. They may find it satisfying to get a taste of our power, but here's the thing: The power and prestige of the New Order are earned. A true Agent has the discipline to use them in a manner that honours the Code. You can always spot a fake.

    2. Yet you can bet that said Knight will keep on trying, perfecting his ganking technique, until he succeeds in his goals. Because the Code ALWAYS wins!!! ALWAYS!!!!

Meanwhile, if that afk miner had lost his retriever, you can bet CCP would have gotten a bucketful of tears about how he was going to cancel his subscription, how dare they let him lose his ship, yadda yadda.

    1. Dear Anonymous February 18, 2015 at 9:45 PM

That's an impressive (& hilarious kill mail), 785 participants no less, good times were had by many I'm sure! However, I feel I should bring to your attention that the event specified in the mail occurred in 0.4 space (or more commonly, low sec).

I would like to bring to your attention that Our glorious leader, James 315, was unanimously voted (by proxy) Supreme Overlord of HIGH sec and If you were at all familiar with the contents of the magnificent manifesto he wrote, The New Halaima Code of Conduct, you'll note it only applies to specified activity in HIGH sec space.

So, in conclusion, I think the point you are trying to make here is moot and full of fail. I hope this helps clarify, please let me know if you have any questions.

    2. It should be noted that this "Titan Kill" was a set up event, not an actual gank of a absolutely fail, what was I thinking, I should be beat with a cod, fit titan.

Try to get your facts straight Anon9:45. You will look less like a desperate carebear trying to troll this fine blog.

    6. More importantly, you will notice that territory governed by the New Order is entirely devoid of mining titans. We have long since removed any such abominations from our space.

It is only through our continued efforts that hisec remains Mining-Titan free.

    9. Just because an Agent of the New Order polices miners in Highsec, doesn't mean that he/she is forbidden from going into lowsec. We're not CONCORD.

We're just a slightly better and more-highly evolved version of CONCORD.. we're what CONCORD would be without bot-aspirancy.

This is factually incorrect; I can confirm that at least one Agent (myself) was part of the fleet that ended up killing the titan after dismantling all competition. Feel free to check the killmail.

Why not be a good citizen, and get yourself a permit instead?

    1. My experience with CODE has been decidedly mixed. In game, attempted to speak with CODE was met with belligerence. I expected to be pressed to buy a permit, or threatened, but I expected that the agent would be polite about it. This was not the case. Response to anything I've said on the blog, though, has been even tempered. I can see the higher purpose of CODE, and I see a great many faults in 'carebears', but my initial dealings with agents turned an initially positive impression sour. I don't know if that happens to other people, but that's at least one reason I can think of why not.

    3. Anon 08:03. Screenshot proof of belligerence. Poking holes in carebear logic is an honorable act. But belligerence is not what code does. Agents should be polite - while fair but firm. You may have been victim of false agents or posers. CODE Inspector ferreted out a poser recently; as you can see on the current blog.

    4. I am certain that the agent in this case was legit because I screened the name from one of the screen shots in this entertaining blog. I submitted my complaint to James 315, and so I consider the matter closed. Either something was said or it wasn't. Either way, though, I'm not angry with anyone. Just disappointed. Maybe the Agent was having an off day. That happens sometimes. I don't know him, and I didn't have a chance to know him, so I can't tell.

My impression, though, is that I can simply choose to remain an enemy. As long as I am polite, I may yet be given the opportunity to change my opinion. I expect you to try to gank me, but I expect you'll be polite about it, so I'll just ride things out and see how they go.

    5. The way you can ensure you remain on good terms with the New Order?
1.) Put your timestamps on your chats.
2.) Make sure you have your permit displayed in your bio
3.) If a New Order Agent asks to see your permit in local, give him a wave after he asks. You should get a polite response, thanking you for being Code-compliant, and then the Agent should head somewhere else.

If this doesn't happen, document it and tell us.

      Delete
    6. I think it's usually a good idea to remain on good terms with as many people as possible. Shooting at each other in EVE doesn't mean we can't respect each other, or be nice to each other in chat. Blowing up my retriever isn't a hate crime, and I can deal with that.

However, as a miner, when I try to talk to CODE to inquire about their greater purpose or how it is carried out, all I get is "Pay or else", which is a bit too far to be classified as "tough, but fair", especially when I'm using language like "may I", and "please". After all, I'm the carebear, and you're supposed to be my better, so holding you up to at least my standard is fair.

    7. When in the field, Agents are often primed to expect nothing but filth and disrespect from non-compliant miners, as that is what happens 99% of the time. Even with the inspiration and instruction provided by the Code, even an Agent may have an off day, or fail to spot a diamond in the rough amongst all the other miners.

Apologies if you have had any negative experiences with our Agents, Anon@9:34. Since you have our attention now, and since (not having to deal with the endless torrent of irl death-threats which having the client open typically entails) we're typically in better moods when in the minerbumping comments, are there any questions or concerns we may address for you now?

    1. The New Order was born in 2012. But before this, James 315 banned capitals from entering what would be later be James 315 Space back in 2007.

Only a few of these "capital miners" still exist, including Chribba's prized "Veldnaught." To be sure, that killmail would be a bright feather in James 315's cap, although admittedly, fighting through the capital reps on that thing to gank it would be a nightmare, even for the New Order.

The New Order is about changing things we can change, not about fighting unwinnable battles.

Another Gallant commenter! Miners, indeed, ~could~ learn that they could mine to their heart's content- without violating The Code, if they would simply mine outside of Highsec! I know! It's a very difficult concept. But CODE. Agents are trying our hardest every day to realize this.

The vision of a Highsec without miners... A time where there will no longer be a need for the New Order... these things... they make me tear up a little. But then I'm coldly brought back to the reality of knowing that these ideals are so far away from being achieved. If only we could achieve exactly zero miners in all of highsec.... then, I think, I might rest easy.

I agree, code agents try hard, but ultimately fail on a daily basis. Seriously, code should be renamed fail. as it would fit far better.
