Fallen Idol, Part 2

Previously, on MinerBumping... Rusell's prized position as a mentor and leader of the Anti-Gankers was jeopardized when he carelessly lost an 8.8 billion isk freighter. At first, life seemed to go on as before, but Rusell outraged his fellow Anti-Gankers when he blamed his losses on the Goons' influence over CCP.
Rusell > it is guilty a freighter who is ganked?
Alexander Kaan > if you can take measures to prevent yourself from getting ganked and you didn't take these measures, you did a mistake, yes
Rusell > Alexander Kaan i dont trust you anymore
Rusell > thats is absolutely false
Rusell > no measures if they decide go for you you cannot do anything
Rusell was sharply criticized by Alexander Kaan, who blamed him for hauling expensive cargo without taking any precautions. But Rusell responded that there is no way to avoid being killed by determined gankers--a claim that called into question the purpose of Anti-Ganking.
Gate Gate Gate > Its a pvp game, you thinking flying a 9bil freighter isnt going to get other players to want to kill it? you filled it with your greed and lost it, completely your fault
Dorothy I > Rusell, the best thing you can do is become informed and inform other people about preventive action. As it is, you are only financing CODE with your losses and giving them content for their sad website.
Alexander Kaan > Rusell, we know how eve works, don't we? If I go out there and get ganked, that was my fault, unless it was due to some bug in the eve client
To Rusell's great surprise, the younger generation of Anti-Gankers did not passively accept his wisdom on the subject. Instead, the old man was subjected to a blistering series of critiques from multiple Anti-Gankers.
Rusell > Alexander Kaan you are insulting all the people who has helped me you are not good person
Alexander Kaan > yeah okay
Rusell > Alexander Kaan you are untrustfull and a goon
Rusell > i want to finish with your business
Rusell attempted to rally support by denouncing his chief critic as a Goon and a "not good person".
Alexander Kaan > Rusell, you still didn't learn how Eve works I see
Alexander Kaan > if you lose a ship in Eve, it means you screwed up something
Gate Gate Gate > Rusell You're the type of person whod drive into the hood with a audi convertable, leave the hood off and the keys in the ignition then go have a nap in a nearby motel and wonder why your car got stolen
Rusell failed to discredit Alexander. In fact, the attacks only seemed to embolden him.
Rusell > eve works as you want but there is only common sense for the gankers
Rusell > Alexander Kaan do not mention my name anymore
Rusell > and do not insult the people with good willing
Alexander Kaan > I can still answer without mentioning your name, right? :P
Alexander Kaan > I missed the part where I insulted people
Next, Rusell argued that by blaming the victim, Alexander was insulting all of the Anti-Gankers who try to interfere with ganks.
Alexander Kaan > I didn't even insult you, I told you you did not protect your hauling op with enough measures
Rusell > telling that a freighter is guilty because is ganked is absolutely unfair like you are
Rusell > you are unfair person
Alexander Kaan > well, that's the truth, though. I am always willing to tell people how to fix the error but there's no hiding from the fact that anyone losing a ship has screwed up something
On another day, perhaps Rusell's strategy would have succeeded. Alexander might have been banned from the channel on suspicion of harboring Goon sympathies. But the loss of an 8.8 billion isk freighter had severely undermined Rusell's credibility.
Dorothy I > That's the point, Eve doesn't work as you want. You have to adapt for Eve and keep adapting depending on how other people adapt to it. Sure, there could be a different approach to ganking, but there isn't.
Gate Gate Gate > whats the point of this game if your safe to do whatever you want, you want a single player game
Rusell > telling me that im guilty because they have decide to harass me all the weekend makes me guilty?
Rusell > if you are caught you are caught
Rusell couldn't believe what he was hearing. It was as if the Anti-Ganking channel had been taken over by a bunch of Code supporters.
Alexander Kaan > step1: don't get caught
Alexander Kaan > step2: don't haul too much collateral to make the gank worth it
Alexander Kaan > step3: try to avoid accepting trap courier contracts
Gate Gate Gate > step1 is more like dont fly a freighter with 8bil inside
With a chorus of supporters backing him up, Alexander went on to tell Rusell all the things he'd done wrong. Now it was Rusell's turn to lose his patience:
Rusell > where
Rusell > where do you want that i go
Rusell > they controll 24 hours per day perimeter urlen sivala uedama and niarja kaap and madirmilire
Rusell > you pass by if they want if not you wont pass by
The Anti-Ganking leader exploded at his critics, declaring that the gankers had total control of all the highsec trade routes. It was a stunning admission; the New Order's enemies sometimes question our relevance. Rusell had gone dangerously off-message.
Gate Gate Gate > then he should take the huge risk like a man
Alexander Kaan > I don't care where you go, my point is that I've lost my share of ships too. I once lost a Retriever to CODE because I was mining Ice while taking a dump away from computer and it was my goddamn fault ;)
Dorothy I > Archeage handled it differently. You can get sent to prison and then to trial, you can get expelled from your nation, you can't swing back with reputation as easily. But that isn't EVE, and this isn't the suggestion forum.
If Rusell hoped that his fellow Anti-Gankers would join him in complaining about the unfairness of EVE's game mechanics, his hopes were disappointed.
Alexander Kaan > ever heard about webbing alts?
Alexander Kaan > or scouts, even
Alexander Kaan > or not hauling the courier with the same pilot you accept the contract from
Gate Gate Gate > hed rather be lazy and blame the game for him being stupid
Rusell > are you calling stupid to jennifer?
Rusell > jennifer was webbing me Alexander Kaan
Desperate, Rusell tried to invoke the name of Jennifer en Marland, another celebrated Anti-Ganker. Jennifer also happened to be a channel moderator. If Alexander criticized her, he might be banned as a CODE. spy.
Alexander Kaan > something clearly went wrong and I don't know what because I wasn't there. Doesn't change the fact that you could have taken measures to avoid the gank but you didn't
Rusell > what measures
Rusell > its funny read you
Alexander Kaan > that's the problem, you aren't taking advice seriously
Alexander stepped around the trap set by Rusell and continued to press his attack.
Rusell > you dont realize Alexander Kaan that you are playing a game for the goons
Rusell > advice me lets see you
Rusell > i hope dont see you in any freighter
Alexander Kaan > you threatening me about something?
Rusell only grew angrier. He now believed that Alexander was attempting to usurp his role as a leader of the Anti-Gankers. But Rusell wouldn't give up without a fight. If his opponents wanted an Anti-Ganking civil war, he was more than happy to give them one.

To be continued...

  1. How CODE acts:

Government agencies at all levels aimed to exclude Jews from the economic sphere of Germany by preventing them from earning a living. Jews were required to register their domestic and foreign property and assets, a prelude to the gradual expropriation of their material wealth by the state. Likewise, the German authorities intended to "Aryanize" all Jewish businesses, a process involving the dismissal of Jewish workers and managers, as well as the transfer of companies and enterprises to non-Jewish Germans, who bought them at prices officially fixed well below market value. From April 1933 to April 1938, "Aryanization" effectively reduced the number of Jewish-owned businesses in Germany by approximately two-thirds.

What code forces miners to pay for:

During the Nazi era, German authorities reintroduced the Jewish badge as a key element in their plan to persecute and eventually to destroy the Jewish population of Europe. They used the badge not only to stigmatize and humiliate Jews but also to segregate them and to watch and control their movements.

    2. The problem is CODE then starting to hold miners to THEIR set of rules, essentially trying to force the miners to play they way CODE does. That’s fascism, plain and simple.

It’s ironic that CODE is standing up against the “fascism” of CCP making Highsec safer and safer, only to impose their own brand of fascist standards. Also, they hypocrisy of claiming that if you’re at your keyboard, you’ll be safe, then baiting responses from their victims…

  4. Good evening, New Eden. Allow me first to apologize for this interruption. I do, like many of you, appreciate the comforts of everyday routine, the security of the familiar, the tranquility of repetition, the totality of blogs. I enjoy them as much as any bloke. But in the spirit of commemoration, where upon important events of the past, usually associated with someone's death or the end of some awful bloody struggle, are celebrated with a nice holiday, I thought we could mark this November the 5th, a day that is sadly no longer remembered, by taking some time out of our daily lives to sit down and have a little chat. There are, of course, those who do not want us to speak. I suspect even now, orders are being shouted into telephones, and men with moderator accounts will soon be on their way. Why? Because while the truncheon may be used in lieu of conversation, words will always retain their power. Words offer the means to meaning, and for those who will listen, the enunciation of truth. And the truth is, there is something terribly wrong with this country, isn't there? Cruelty and injustice, intolerance and oppression. And where once you had the freedom to object, to think and speak as you saw fit, you now have censors and systems of surveillance coercing your conformity and soliciting your submission. How did this happen? Who's to blame? Well, certainly, there are those who are more responsible than others, and they will be held accountable. But again, truth be told, if you're looking for the guilty, you need only look into a mirror. I know why you did it. I know you were afraid. Who wouldn't be? War, terror, ganking. They were a myriad of problems which conspired to corrupt your reason and rob you of your common sense. Fear got the best of you, and in your panic you turned to the now high chancellor, James 315. He promised you order, he promised you peace, and all he demanded in return was your silent, obedient consent. This night, I seek to end that silence. This night, I corrupt the MB to remind this community of what it has forgotten. A great citizen wished to embed the fifth of November forever in our memory. His hope was to remind the world that fairness, justice, and freedom are more than words; they are perspectives. So if you've seen nothing, if the crimes of this Code remain unknown to you, then I would suggest that you allow the fifth of November to pass unmarked. But if you see what I see, if you feel as I feel, and if you would seek as I seek, then I ask you to stand beside me, inside the gates of High Sec, and together we shall give them a fifth of November that shall never, ever be forgot.

    3. V wasn't an anarchist but he did favor more of a control by the people attitude rather than the government controls that slowly entangled every bodies lives. His true reasoning wasn't to disrupt government but to expose the crimes it committed to reach the totalitarian heights that it held for far too long. The best way to bring any government down is of course to educate the people and bring them out in force to stand with solidarity against an oppressive regime. He even admits that there was no certainty to his plan, just a hope that people would listen and react as he was predicting. It was all a revenge plot really with the higher stance that he would awaken people to the oppression they lived under.

      Great movie too.

I play mostly in null-sec and wormhole space, and CODE is regarded mostly as a joke by the rest of us. They see themselves as strong elite PVPer’s and nefarious criminals, and portray themselves this way when they want to look good for interviews. We see them as too weak and cowardly to engage in combat with the rest of the PvP oriented groups, rarely ever daring to step into low (or god forbid, null) security space.

Everyone likes to gank miners and traders, it’s fun. But only CODE pretends (maybe deluding themselves) that this makes you powerful and respected (in that “fear = respect” way that many of the nullsec achieve)

So, let me make it clear for you. Irony. Look it up. Of course, there are bound to be those amongst us who don't get it either! But exposure and education hopefully go hand in hand.

When you realise that the accepted purpose of playing a video game is the generation of enjoyment - of 'fun', it should be clear enough.

As for our 'rarely ever daring to step into (not-Highsec)', know that alts are a thing, and that, just as Nullsec folk mine in Highsec on alts, so Highsec gankers spend time elsewhere in New Eden. I'd have thought it obvious to someone who plays mostly in Null and WH space, but then I'd have thought the irony was pretty obvious, too.

    6. Alas, Anon, you haven't 'got it' at all. Are you people intentionally dense?

We operate in Highsec because the carebears wish it to be a safe zone, where the ordinary EVE rules of exposure to PvP 'shouldn't' apply. They'd not behave as they do if they were in Null or Low/WH. We simply wish to remind them that they are nowhere exempt from the PvP nature of the game.

There would be no point in bringing the Code to e.g. Nullsec, for it already applies there; proof of its validity for the game as a whole.

By other code Nazis no less.
This really means that the permit is useless anyway and its just a scam to give them good vibes and give code more money.

Broken down its permit = scams

Modern AG consider ganking to be a virtual inevitability and rightly scoff at his outdated thinking. After all, for their entire existence we have been an unstoppable force.

Modern AG are observed to repeat platitudes like "any ship will die if they want to kill it badly enough." Some say shocking things like "We're not here to stop ganks." Think about that one. The goalposts have been sufficiently shifted to allow them to declare success over a variety of mundane things, such as delaying a gank, increasing the cost of a gank, counter-ganking a gank support ship, or stealing some of the loot of a gank. Some consider even the successful arrival of *any* freighter at its destination to be a victory.

Times have certainly changed for the better.

To believe that any person has a right to dictate how a person plays a game, as long as their playing it within the boundaries of the games design, is arrogant to the highest. He, and others like him, need to realize that a loss in a video game can still be a emotionally charged even traumatic event for some people. In particular when it’s the loss of something that someone may have spent 100’s of hours attaining. I realize that this is probably a idea I’m going to get flamed for but “It’s just a videogame” isn’t an excuse for harassment, and harassing under the guise of role playing is still harassment.

If they don't choose to obey, then there can be no surprise that the terrible events foretold AS A CONSEQUENCE come to fruition. Your beef with James is that he is truthful in telling miners that their natural, ISK-grubbing behavior is going to get them killed. There is no arrogance there. Just love. Your logic is a double-edged sword. Our Agents operate within the boundaries of the game's design, but carebears and bot-aspirants frequently attempt to dictate our playstyle. The carebears have a long history of lobbying for changes to the boundaries, in the form of nerfs to highsec aggression, in an attempt to curtail our beloved playstyle.

The ultimate arrogance is the carebear belief in an entitlement to be "left alone" in a multiplayer PvP game.

You can see this in action when idiots are persuaded to do something they don't wish to do. Instead of railing at their own stupidity, they bad-mouth the trigger.

    5. The 2 Anons who took issue with me.

I did not say that online harassment was not a thing nor that harassment is not hurtful to some people. What I did was to take a giant leap forwards. Let me help you.

If you're being harassed online (or anywhere else), what is the usual remedy? It is to limit the opportunities of the harasser.

Then you go elsewhere and encounter yet another such person. Did the solution work? No. It couldn't, for your vulnerability to this kind of behaviour has not been addressed.

The miner in his fail-fit retriever continues to be exploded, going from new ship to new ship but sporting the very same fittings which got him exploded the first time. Yet better fits are available to him, and other means of avoidance are not far away.

In the real world, people who find it difficult to deal with harassment and the ills of the world can only really learn to combat them by taking professional advice. That way, each time they come across those particular troubles they've a burned-in method of nullifying them.

The miner and the victim have this in common; they possess the means to thwart each and every attempt to affect them in the way you describe. If they choose not to avail themselves of those means, what is one to say of them?

Offering tea and sympathy is not enough; we are, each of us, responsible for seeking and applying the solutions to our problems.

      Delete
    6. Anita Sarkeesian would say find this a male patriarchal statement as she does tend to state that there is no reason for online harassment targeting particular individuals and when confronted with the mistakes of harassing those individuals they state that it is the victim to blame and not the harassers. Almost like saying the woman was raped because she was not dressed appropriately, it was her fault and not the rapist. Or the person committed suicide because he would not stay offline and avoid the harassment. It is a way of marginalizing the victim and laying blame upon the victim while relieving responsibility of the guilty.

      Delete
    7. Ah, Anon, I'm way ahead of you, for I saw your argument/s coming a mile off.

I have nowhere said that online harassment should go unpunished.

Let's be clear. The victim of a rl physical assault is not to blame in any way for that attack having happened. But he or she is almost always offered help in coping with the aftermath of such an event.

Online harassment is different. You cannot prevent it, but you can nullify the 'attack' while it is in progress, something which is impossible in the physical realm.

The mistake you're making is 1) Quoting experts without using your own common sense to judge whether what they're saying actually applies in this instance, and 2) Reading into my statements what you wish to be there, rather than what is actually present.

Both these errors can be avoided if you put down Ms Sarkeesian for a moment, and turn your attention inward, to Anon. The answers you seek are all there, if you take the time to ponder the matter.

    8. So why are there Punishments for online bullying that lead to suicides? Why was Ms Sarkeesian and her partner allowed to address this very issue at the UN summit? Now I think you are just being misogynistic because your male and don't think Anita's comments about harassment in gaming are valid. Do you not read her work or watch any of her videos? Harassment and bullying in video games is real and is being addressed and Eve may not be on the block for review yet but it should be and your group will most likely be the very lynchpin that will be used as proof of harassment bullying and hate speech. ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. CODE have created an arbitrary set of rules which they impose upon other plays and dismiss any complaints as silly because EVE is just a game. They then go on to complain that CCP imposed arbitrary rules on them, which they shouldn’t care about because by their own logic EVE is just a game.

    2. Of course by systematically harassing people in an ongonig fashion, they’re being total pricks.

      Delete
  15. This is basically my thought. The problem with what they’re doing is that the way they run their attacks is basically exploiting the game’s rules in order to be a bunch of pricks with no possibility of consequences. The correct response from CCP is probably to tweak the game rules so that purchasing cheap ships with a lot of guns and then doing suicide runs with them is no longer so cost-efficient.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I do wonder sometimes what would happen if CCP removed highsec entirely. I suspect the game would be reduced to a post apocalyptic wasteland populated solely by vicious trolls within a year.

      Delete
    2. Hello Anon 8.44. The very basic nature of your thought encourages me to put to you the following proposition.

CCP knows what ganking is and precisely how it is effected in Highsec. They make the rules. If the rules are being exploited, they have the absolute authority to change them. But they don't change them, do they?

And who on earth are you to tell CCP what their 'correct response' should be?

Ganking as undertaken by the New Order (not Miniluv) has never been 'cost-efficient'. Typical of a carebearing dunce to assume that expense is a factor in our operations. Hell, some of my comrades don't even bother to loot the gank-recipient's wreck. I certainly don't if it's a load of garbage.

I run at a loss. Every time I undock. So what? I'm enjoying myself.

I'm going to gloss over your 'no possibility of consequences' statement, for I don't wish to be too hard on you.

      Arrogant twaddle, Anon; hogwash.

      Delete
    3. It was never cost efficient to suicide gank miners, freighters maybe on a good night, but never miners with the exception of the plextanked idiot here and there.

      Delete
    6. I'm not the smartest person around. If someone expresses something which is wrong, I can correct them, and at the same time imply that the same answer was available to them if they took the trouble to look for it.

It isn't an issue of intelligence, merely one of effort. Education is about effort, which is why some people who might otherwise profit from it, find it.... difficult.

      Delete
    7. So the easiest method to acquiring wealth in the game without max or even modest effort in the eve game would be mining?
So players who want to grow a corporation without having to task themselves into more strenuous efforts like piracy or scamming are being punished for wanting to be on an easier money making adventure.
And what of those who would do the needed education to be viable in the market by building and creating? The effort in educating ones self to become savvy enough to profit without fighting would still be punished for being a pacifist.
So code is the reminder that one is entering into a PvP game by constantly killing the players?
If so I would like your agents to remember that they too must abide by the laws or be treated with just as much punishment as those who are not agents. That should include broadcasting their names on this site for their violations and a constant threat to their ships and efforts. as well a fine for each infraction. Let us not forget the constant name calling of carebear miner or what is this ag thing. If your corp is equal iin all things then your agents themselves must abide by their own laws and receive equal punishment.

However I think there may be some confusion as to where this blog would fit, RL or Eve gaming? If it is within the gaming mindset then it is further punishment of those who violate your rules to mock and publicize their in game identities so others are aware of them and can hunt them down or be mindful of their passing by. however if this site is to be taken as a blog in RL outside of the gaming mindset then this is just harassment by itself. So is this site meant to be a part of your groups "metagaming" or is it indeed just a meeting grounds to demean and belittle those who do not follow your order within the eve gaming universe?

    9. Anon 10.12, you've posed some interesting stuff there. Check out the link to James' very first blog post, on 7th August 2012. There, he sets out the reasons for the blog and the basis for his hands-off approach to moderation of the comments section.

I'm often amused by people's behaviour in this game. Perhaps 'bemused' is more accurate.

Many of them expect behaviour in a virtual world to imitate that of the 'real' world - but they are frustrated when their own responses to that behaviour are limited in a way which isn't present in that 'real' world.

You can see just how angry they get that they can't call the cops (CCP) or whack the offender in the gob (no substitute - losing a ship isn't losing a tooth).

And so, in order to play along with the letter and spirit of the game (as programmed by its designers), we exploit to the full the opportunities presented to us. If only the miners and carebears did the same.

You know, there are some gank-recipients who really do enter into the spirit of the thing, answering back, arguing, providing some kind of effective response, but the majority just vent and rage, for all the good that does.

I've recently finished a piece of work which at one point gives prominence to a frankly ghastly and obscene comment from someone who was ganked. That is, someone whose spaceship was destroyed in a video game about destroying spaceships. If I'm fortunate enough to have it find its way to the blog, you may want to have a look.

Anyone who is so lacking in self-control that he considers it appropriate to utter such a comment is certainly going to attract my attention. The name attached to the comment is that of an avatar. I feel no reluctance in broadcasting that name.

Let him be hunted, for all I care. Publish and be damned!

    10. God this guy still using the carebear term for undesirable, he sounds intelligent but mouths nazi

    11. Wouldn't the object of the game be to become successful in your endeavor, instead of just a spaceship game to blow up other spaceships, if people wanted that kind of game theres plenty of sidescrolling space games for blowing up spaceships. plenty of other space pilot games where the only point is to blow up spaceships. no other game has options for those who don't want to blow stuff up and have options. Are you just looking at the singular aspect of the game and focusing on that and ignoring the other aspects that other players are interested in?

      Delete
    12. Unfortunately not all avatar names are just that, some people have made the mistake of associating real names into the game, foolish yes but leading to problematic issues with both the person whos name it is and the person who publishes the name.

    16. Anon 12.51, naming one's avatar is a matter of choice - within limits set out by the game folks. You make your bed, and you lie in it.

I've no doubt that at some point I'll regret the Sasha Nemtsov/Rob Thompson thing; but it's a calculated risk, and if it gets me into trouble, then I've no one to blame but myself - and the guy who turns up on my doorstep with a meat cleaver, of course.

Death is always much closer than anyone of us thinks.

  17. Back when I played, when CODE was starting out, I ended up as the subject of some of their website ridicule. While this didn’t bother me at first, it quickly began to as I began to receive threatening comments in game. These ranged from simple insults up to calls for me to kill myself and threats to dox and attack me in my home.

These messages all came from agents, confirmed when I foolishly tried to ask in the or public channel for them to ease up a bit. While some agents did apologise and cease, others upped their game, attempting to post dodged info on the forums, info happily purged by the forum admins. The very worst was when one agent decided to tell players in Kino local I was a child rapist which shocked me to my core at the pettiness and sheer cruelty of the untrue comment.

I of course sent petitions given the severity but left the game in disgust when it was revealed the responsible players were still playing with no sign that they had even been warned.

CODE are not the heroes they claim to be..While some are nice when not ganking, the majority are in it to simply be cruel and heartless. I will not say my eve chars name as i do not wish for further threats against my person.

What aboout the other 200 players in the AG channel, who are they then?

    2. Remember that this is a game and peoples motivations are much different in a gaming world, for those who would oppose the code they would need the ability to find them as a gank happens, the means to sustain their operations to replenish ships weapons and supplies, and the motivation to do so.
Yes all these things exist within game and are readily available for them to oppose the code. But here's where anti-ganking has, and still is, failing. They have no Organization.
Even if they could figure a way to track and stop all ganks being done by the code had an unlimited resource of ships and so on, and whatever motivation be it code is like Nazis or terrorist or whatever, they simply have no organizational structure to make it work.
Code has organization means ability and motivation, even with infighting within the ranks the structure remains and it holds up even during times on said infighting. HSM and Anti-ganking just have no organization to be a working "Allied Force". It can get any traction to really be considered a start.
