Mining, Wining, and Whining

Some people are content to let injustice slide. They sigh, "Why bother? What can I do?"

...And then there are the Agents of the New Order of Highsec. Our Agents are men and women of action. Minx Mattel saw an unlicensed miner and ganked him. She made justice happen.

The miner in question, tonus Yotosala, was disoriented after the attack. Partly it was because he wasn't used to losing ships in highsec. Also, he was buzzed.

One of the weird things about highsec carebears is that they expect to be reimbursed for their losses, even when the idea hasn't been suggested by anyone. They really think someone will pull off a perfectly good gank and then spend a bunch of money to pacify the guy they killed. Needless to say, that's not EVE.

When tonus heard about the Code, he threatened to file a petition. You know, CCP's resources are limited these days. The last thing they need is to spend time reading complaints from a bunch of drunks.

The miner considered moving elsewhere, yet he remained in place. It's just as well, since the mighty CODE. alliance has 100% coverage of highsec.

Hoping to sober the miner up, Minx name-dropped the Saviour of Highsec. It put tonus in an even worse mood. An intoxicated Goofus!

Minx urged the miner to purchase a permit, but there was a danger here: tonus might not even remember their encounter the next day. Then she'd have to explain the Code all over again, and request another 10 million isk.

tonus had mined and wined all night, and now he was whining, too. However, there was a glimmer of hope: Might tonus truly choose a better path--or was it the sauce talking?

Unfortunately, tonus' opinion of ganking took a sudden and unwelcome turn.

Agent Minx realized that the miner was too numb to feel the searing truths of the Code. He was feeling no pain. He might need to lose additional ships to get the point.

tonus stumbled his way out of the EVE client so he could go pass out somewhere. When next he awoke, he would have a lossmail and a hangover. The best cure for both of those things? The Code.

The Nerd

Highsec miner Bud Grills was struggling with EVE. He was in a 0.9 security system with a Retriever--and he was mining in silent desperation.

Agents of the New Order came to his rescue. See that fit? I told you this guy was struggling.

Agent Mal Warre introduced herself to the miner. Bud was still in a daze from the gank.

Mal linked the Code. Bud didn't need to read it to be triggered by it. Even the Code's URL is potent.

The miner was clearly outgunned, yet he remained defiant. Miners are often at their most belligerent when they don't have a ship.

Bud was completely out of touch with the reality of his situation. He seemed to think it was possible to cry his way out of his obligations to the Code.

One of Mal Warre's colleagues is Agent Sigrid Freud. Thanks to their friendship, Mal was very familiar with the concept of the Freudian slip. Bud had rocks on the brain.

Bud claimed to be back in action already, but Mal was skeptical--and she intended to find out the truth of the matter. The New Order has eyes and ears everywhere.

The miner was cracking up, and not in a good way. If Mal wanted to save Bud, time was running out.

A second Freudian slip! Excessive mining is against the Code for a reason.

After Bud terminated the convo, Mal discovered that the miner, as suspected, wasn't really out mining with a replacement ship. Bud was docked up in Jita. Their conversation continued via EVEmail.

For some reason, Bud kept calling Mal a nerd; he seemed to end every EVEmail with the word. Perhaps Bud was signing his EVEmails as "nerd"?

It took a long time, but Bud finally played the "new player" card. (He may have been reluctant due to the fact that his character was created in 2013.)

Bud's defenses were down. He even admitted that he was just a miner, something that he'd vociferously denied until now.

What remained of Bud's mind was deteriorating rapidly. Agent Mal offered Bud one final chance to get Code-compliant. If he refused, New Order assistance to this miner would need to resume at a later date.

Bud (or "nerd", as he preferred to be called) ceased communicating with his would-be rescuer. He may have thought of himself as a nerd, but another name better describes him: Goofus.

Ethical Hauling

Behind (almost) every good freighter killmail is a bumper.

Agent Siegfried Cohenberg is one of the most celebrated bumpers in EVE history. For years, he has bumped freighters, jump freighters, and other enemies of highsec. Since bumpers typically don't get on killmails, it can be a thankless task--though sometimes the freighter can be persuaded, pre-gank, to compensate the bumper for his services.

One fine day in Madirmilire, Agent Siegfried encountered an Obelisk pilot by the name of Evey McEveFace. She was a confirmed bot-aspirant. Siegfried demanded that Evey eject from the Obelisk and allow the ship to be boarded. Evey refused--until a group of gankers applied some damage to the vessel.

Fearing that a second wave of attackers would finish her off, Evey complied. Siegfried confiscated the freighter and searched it for contraband.

Evey's Obelisk was filled with 1.6 billion isk worth of cargo. None of it was licensed. Siegfried intended to make an example of Evey, but she begged him for mercy. She was desperate to get the freighter back.

Fortune smiled upon Evey. It just so happened that Siegfried knew of a corporation where freighter pilots can be trained to engage in ethical, Code-compliant hauling practices. The corp, Cohenberg's Ethical Hauling, belonged to an alliance with a remarkable reputation.

Alas, some rebels have attempted to besmirch the name of Cohenberg's Ethical Hauling over the years. No doubt each and every one of these slanderers is in the pocket of the bot-aspirancy lobby.

Siegfried made Evey an offer: She could get her Obelisk and its cargo back, but only if she joined the corp and completed a special assignment for the mighty CODE. alliance. Her job was to deliver 100 Catalysts to Uedama. As a trial member of Cohenberg's Ethical Hauling, she would be required to use her own freighter (another Obelisk) and purchase the Catalysts herself.

On the plus side, Evey would enjoy some benefits of being a member of the corp. For example, friendly fire was helpfully set to "legal" so corp members could web each other without CONCORD intervention.

Evey eagerly accepted Siegfried's deal. Unfortunately, by the time she reached Uedama, she fell victim to temptation. She was unable to complete her assignment in a fully Code-compliant manner. Shocked by her behavior, Evey's corpmates had no choice but to awox her.

The combined loss of two freighters and their cargo put Evey 4 billion isk in the red. It was a rough first day for the new recruit.

Interns for Cohenberg's Ethical Hauling might not get any isk, but they do get paid in experience. You can't put a price on that.
